Shelter Quarter use (Zeltbahn gebrauch)

The main tasks of the shelter quarter were as follows:

  •  to make a tent

  •  to act as a rain cape (Regenmantel)

Below a tent made of four shelter quarters
on top of the tent, a german helmet to prevent rain water from entering the tent

The following pictures come from the German Army Manual H.Dv. 205/1 (Heeres Diensvorschrift)

The single tent (Einzelzelt)

This configuration offered some protection against
the rain and wind, but hardly deserves the name tent.

A half tent (Halbzelt)

This configuration also offered a little bit protection
against rain and wind, and begins to look like a tent.

Four man pyramid tent (Viererzelt)

In this often seen configuration the tent offered place for four persons.

The tents could be extended to offer accomodation for more persons
like this eight man tent (Achterzelt)

And finaly the so called house tent (Hauszelt)

With the use of 16 shelter quarters a tent could be made with a total surface of 25 m2 and a height of 2,80m

The Rain Cape (Regenmantel)

The shelter quarter also could be used as a rain cape.
By buttoning up the shelter quarter in a different way, 3 versions could be made:

  •  unmounted

  •  mounted

  • cyclists

Here the unmounted way is shown.

As can be seen, the shelter quarter could be worn
over the equipment.

Here the mounted way is shown.

The top is buttoned uo higher as to leave
more space for the legs.

Here the method is shown for cyclists.

As can be seen, the shelter quarter is buttoned up
around the legs.

On the left the shelter quarter is shown worn
over the equipment.
